After Party

My birthday was nice enough, thank you.  It was a weekday, and Matt got stuck in horrendous traffic on the way home and then fell asleep at 9:00 pm, before I got upstairs, so it was a rather short birthday.  But we plan to continue celebrations on the weekend with some Thai food, so it is all good.

My cake came out delicious, but my buttercream frosting did not.  It was the consistency of pudding, instead of buttercream, and then when I attempted to thicken it by putting it in the fridge, it separated and got gross.  Anyone have any idea what I did wrong?  I used the recipe in my Williams-Sonoma Cake Cookbook.  I’ve never tried to make “official” buttercream before.

We did go out to dinner last night, so that I wouldn’t have to cook.  The neighborhood Mexican restaurant emailed me a coupon for a free birthday dinner that morning, so we took them up on it.  I walked in, set the coupon on the table, and the waitress said “I’ll have to check this with my manager.”  Okay, fine.  Then she brought it back and said “my manager agreed to accept this.”  But she sounded like they thought we were trying to pull a fast one on them.  And I was all confused because they emailed it to me that morning.  And then they offered me free dessert but never delivered on it.  (Well, until we were standing up to leave and the waitress offered to go get it, but it was too late then.)  But it was a really nice dinner and Elizabeth behaved beautifully, considering that it was a “school night” and much later than we usually go out to dinner.
