Summer Camp, Day Eight

Day 8– If you had to teach something, what would you teach? (If you DO teach, when did you discover your love for teaching/the subject?) Do you think blogs can play a role in education?

I used to teach elementary school.  I taught (at different times) first grade, second grade, third grade, and fifth grade.  Yikes.  I also taught summer camp where I had all the kids from next year’s kindergarteners to last year’s sixth graders.  Double yikes.

I don’t know that I’d go back and teach regular school again.  I didn’t get paid anything worth even cashing the check and I taught at a terrible school where administrators and parents were problems.  (I had a fellow teacher, who was the mother of one of the boys in my class, who would scream at me in the hall.)  (And she’d scream at me because she thought I was unfairly punishing her child.  You know, when I’d punish him for screaming at me.)

If I were to teach whatever I wanted, I’d teach a college level Psychology 101 course.  And then some Behavioral Psych courses.  And some Psychology Lab courses.  Ahhh, I am making up lecture plans in my head as I write.  We’d have gerbils and Skinner boxes and two way mirrors!

As for blogs in education, I have a story about that.  When I was a senior in college, I took Human Sexuality as a Psych course.  And we were in the computer lab, reading blogs on sex (to STUDY them as they related to society and all that), when the September 11 attacks happened.
