Friday Night Leftovers- The Park Was Cold Edition

by HereWeGoAJen on February 10, 2012

  • Well, Leslie and I are still going to the gym.  Curse Leslie.  If it weren’t for her, I could have quit this weeks ago and been spending all my mornings lying in bed in my pajamas.
  • I am in bed in my pajamas right now.  Except it isn’t morning.
  • The best part about visiting Courtney’s house?  She lives near a Krispy Kreme.  The nearest Krispy Kreme to my house is too far away.  So I have to visit Courtney, which obviously is just an excuse to go to Krispy Kreme.
  • I will still never forgive Krispy Kreme for using Ks instead of spelling things properly.  I will eat their delicious doughnuts (and a lot of them), but I will continue to hold my tiny grudge over their choice of spelling.
  • We went to the park for a picnic today with friends.  It was 43 degrees.  (And that’s Fahrenheit.)  It was just a wee bit too cold.  It would have been better, but I thought it was in the fifties and dressed us accordingly.
  • We still stayed for two hours and had a great time.  But I was cold by the time we left.
  • The best part of it being in the 40s was that the park was completely empty other than our group.  I do love a nice empty park.
  • After we got home, Elizabeth and I snuggled in the chair together with blankets and watched an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  She told me “I am bery, bery, bery beautiful and comfortable.”  So she was pretty happy at that point.
  • Elizabeth has decided that she is afraid of robots.  Long ago, she decided that Daddy works with robots (it’s a long story, but Daddy and Mr. Incredible leave for work in exactly the same way and Mr. Incredible goes off in the movie to fight robots, so obviously Daddy goes off to fight robots too…) and we said, sure, fine, Daddy works with robots.  Sometimes the robots send Elizabeth a present from work (it’s usually a lollipop) and when we go into Daddy’s work, we see the robots.  (Matt works in a warehouse, so there is a lot of machinery around that looks enough like a robot to satisfy a three year old.)  We’ve only been there on the weekend though, so the robots are always sleeping and quiet and since they send presents, obviously they are nice robots.  But recently, she’s been a little concerned.  Today, when Matt got home from work, they went on a robot hunt around the house and made sure there were no robots in our house.  And then they checked outside and then we locked the door so that no robots could get in.
  • Her imagination has gotten much richer lately, and with that comes more fear.  She used to not be afraid of anything much.  Except strangers anyway.
  • Matt is downstairs watching a horror movie.  I am upstairs with my laptop, a doughnut, a chocolate chip cookie, and a thermos of milk.  I win at Friday Night Activities.

For more Friday Night Leftovers, visit Danifred.  She’s tired.

Awww what a fun Friday. That would be like a heat wave her at 43 degrees. It’s going to be a blistering 20 tomorrow.

That was cute that Matt and Miss E had to go on the robot hunt. Those are priceless memories for him and you. We’ve had to do similar thing too just to satisify G.

PS I came across this website and I thought it looked pretty cool. Knowing that you sometimes entertain kids at your house it might be fun for stuff.

I scrolled down and saw the turkey hunt and thought of you instantly.

The robots thing cracks me up. She is SUCH an imaginative kid! I love the way her little brain works.

As a former teacher, Jennifer, what would did do if you had a student in your class named Elizabeth but asked to be called Dibits? I ask because I have had a “discussion” with a few friends, recently, that teach, currently, and they REFUSE to call a child by a nickname. Even so much as if the child’s name was Elizabeth and they go by Beth, Lizzie, Lizbeth everywhere else, they refuse to call her anything but her legal birth name.

Personally, as long as it’s appropriate and the parent is okay w/the child’s wish (I ask in a parent questionnaire) I don’t care! I just ask that they write their full “BIRTH NAME (Catherine, Kristine, Jennifer)” on their papers and if they also want to write their nickname too they can! I don’t think it hurts anyone/anything.

Just wondering your thoughts? Or anyone’s out there? Parents, teachers, everyone/anyone I would love your input too!

When I was growing up, everyone called me by my middle name — including teachers. That’s “who” I was. I think it’s almost unkind to refuse to call a child by their nickname (especially if it’s appropriate and okay with their parents and it’s what the child prefers). It’s “who” they are. I don’t see the harm either. I guess I’m more confused by those teachers who refuse to use nicknames.

Thanks leanne! Not only was it a group of “friends,” I experienced it throughout my career. I was out of the building one day and one of my students liked to be called Bear as a little girl was very upset because they Guest Instructor (aka substitute) told her Bear wasn’t a real name and refused to call her Bear (this was in K
and by the time I had her again in 5th grade she wanted to be called her given name; sure I slipped because she was always Bear to me; so she allowed me to call her Bear—LOL—G-d I LOVED teaching). I apologized to Bear & her OUTRAGED Mom and put an ever more BLUNT AND TOO THE POINT LETTER in my Guest Instructor Folder that said, “The attacked list is what the students are called! If the list says they go by Bear than that’s what they need to be called. I would prefer not to return after a two day conference to crying children who were told their nicknames were unacceptable!” I also made sure this particular GI never returned to my room.

I had a student that wanted to be called Megs, Dutch, Bre and so many more. As long as they write their given name on their papers (long story) along with their nickname I could care less. And as long as the parents and child request, I would oblige. Who cares? I feel sorry for the kids whose lasts names are Dorko, Cox, and so many more in the years I taught. Often times I made them research the origin of their last times as a project to take the pressure of some of those kids. Once the kids heard that their name was 1/4 this, an 1/8 that, etc., Dorko is no longer made fun of, it’s cool!
