Showered

by HereWeGoAJen on September 7, 2012

I have to confess that I don’t really understand the whole “baby shower only for the first baby” thing.  I kind of think of a baby shower as the baby’s very first birthday party and why would we not give subsequent babies their own birthday parties?  But I do understand that not everyone thinks that way.

Anyway, today my friends threw me a baby shower.  I had an online baby shower for Elizabeth, thrown by the lovely Dresden, but I didn’t have anyone in Florida to throw an in-person shower, since we had only just moved there.  And I’ve only really been to one other baby shower in my life and all I really remember about that was having to play lots and lots of Pictionary.  (Hi, Barb!)  So I am kind of a shower novice.

Anyway, my friends are awesome.  You shall now enjoy some pictures. Because you have to.

Why yes, I am having a boy, and yes, all those presents on the mantel are pink.  That is because they are FOR ELIZABETH. My friends are awesome.  They got her a bunch of stuff that she can open after the baby gets here so she feels special and has things to do. I am told that they are all things that are quiet(ish) activities for her to do while we are stuck in the house.

See, those are baby presents.

Look, the blue punch has a LITTLE DUCKIE IN IT.

Elizabeth got a big sister princess crown to wear and her own baby brother ribbon.  (She thought this party was all for her and whispered to me at one point “they are going to need me to make the wish when we have the cupcakes.”)

There was a kid food table and they had gotten lots of kid friendly foods, including Elizabeth’s favorites- black olives and pickles.  (I’m not kidding, how awesome are my friends? I told Matt this and he said “how did they even KNOW that those are her favorites?”) They also had playdough all set up and little baby shower accessories for them to play with in the playdough.

I got many fabulous presents, but the motorcycle was so cute that it needed its own picture.

(Also, one friend made me a scrapbook, totally finished except for the pictures, with an ABC theme. HOURS OF WORK. And another friend made me a cloth diaper. And I would go on and on here until I listed every single adorable onesie. GAH, everything so SO CUTE and SO NICE AND AAAAHHH. I CANNOT TAKE THE NICENESS OF MY FRIENDS.)

I included this picture because Elizabeth and I both look pretty good and that almost never happens in one picture.

After two and a half hours, Elizabeth finally stopped playing and remembered she had presents too (one of the two year old girls there, who has just kind of started talking for real, excitedly led Elizabeth into the room when we first got there, pointed, and said “Yizbif, we bwought you a pwesent!” and she was so excited and it was adorable) so she had to open one of her big sister presents then.  I’m actually astounded that she made it to the end of the party before demanding one.  She got a stroller and immediately had to steal the baby monkey off the diaper cake to ride in the stroller.

I realize after writing all this and doing all the pictures that I put in a lot more about Elizabeth than about me.  Habit, I guess. I write about her on here a lot more than about myself. (And am a lot more critical about how I look in pictures. Am shy, you guys!) Anyway, do not worry! I was spoiled more than enough today. I also had my own fancy baby boy ribbon to wear, got tons of presents, balloons, and flowers.  Many of my favorite foods were featured on the lunch buffet and people kept bringing me stuff.  (Chicken salad sandwiches! (With no celery!) Potato salad! Spinach dip! They even had milk to drink because that is my favorite beverage. Milk that had been dyed blue for the occasion!)

Okay. Fine.

I also don’t usually include pictures of other people or their children on here (unless I’ve asked), so I left all those pictures out.  (Almost all of the pictures have someone else in them.)  And I can almost never remember who I have asked.  I need to start a file and have people sign releases so that I could look them up.  But I do remember that I’ve asked Courtney, so here is one last one.  Like a dessert picture.

Oh my heavens that diaper motorcycle with monkey is ADORABLE! If my friend lets me throw her a shower, you have GOT to tell me who made it and how I can reach them so I can make it for her! I’m not crafty AT ALL, but I might be able to wrangle that into shape. :)

I’m glad your friends thought ahead and included Elizabeth. It sounds like you have some tremendously fabulous friends.

Jennifer made it. She said you do the wheels by putting seventeen diapers in a cake pan, fanning them into a circle, and then putting a rubber band around them. (Then you tie a ribbon around the rubber band to make it pretty.) Then receiving blankets to tie the wheels together. And a receiving blanket with cardboard in it for the handlebars, with socks as the hand grips. The headlight is a sippy cup. The wheel guard things (what are those called on a real motorcycle anyway) are washcloths. The monkey was attached with those baby wrist rattles holding his hands to the handlebars.

You look so good!

The idea with the baby shower is that a shower is for the parents to set themselves up for a new phase in their life – becoming parents, and to celebrate the entry into a new phase of life. The usual is for this to happen once. After the first shower, you already have all the stuff, so you don’t need another shower. Also, you are already parents, so even if you could have bought all the stuff the first time and therefore didn’t really need the stuff, there was still a meaning to it the first time around that no longer exists the second time, because you entered this phase of life with the birth of your first child. Having subsequent showers would be like asking all your family and friends to buy gifts and attend a reception for all your wedding anniversaries.

The concept/meaning behind the shower has drifted somewhat (moreso in America) and not everyone is on board with the new, “modern” meaning (especially outside America) as different cultures have different relationships to gift-giving, especially of material gifts, and to celebrating individuals vs a more communal celebration of life (and its stages). (This without getting into the changes in marriage over time.)

Anyway. Anthropology hat off. Hope that explains things.

Glad you had a good time!
